Capturing Hope: Zack Snyder and AFSP's 'A Talk Away the Dark' Event

Event Overview

On May 20, 2024, the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena hosted a significant panel discussion titled "A Talk Away the Dark," organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). This event aimed to shed light on mental health and suicide prevention, featuring notable speakers dedicated to this cause. As the Technical Director, I was responsible for ensuring the event's smooth execution and high-quality production.

Preparation and Execution

Preparation began on May 17, 2024. Our team worked diligently to set up and test all necessary equipment. We provided three high-end cameras to capture the event from multiple angles, and live switching capabilities allowed us to transition seamlessly between camera feeds. Our sound team ensured top-notch audio quality, meticulously setting up and testing professional sound equipment.

On the day of the event, we arrived early to ensure everything was perfect. Our focus was on maintaining high-quality footage and crystal-clear audio throughout the discussions and presentations. The event was recorded in stunning 4K using both the cameras and Shogun monitors, with an HD line cut made for versatility in post-production.

Logistics and Post-Event Focus

Handling the logistics was another important aspect of my role. I personally managed the pick-up and drop-off of cameras, ensuring all equipment was in excellent condition. To address the slow offload speed of the supplied drive, I took the memory cards home for secure data transfer.

After the event, we shifted our focus to data management and ensured all equipment was returned in perfect condition. The high-quality recordings are now ready for post-production, preserving the impactful discussions that took place.

AFSP's Mission and Event Impact

AFSP's mission is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. The "A Talk Away the Dark" panel was a crucial part of this mission, bringing together experts and advocates to discuss strategies for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. By overseeing every technical detail, from setup to execution and data management, I ensured that the event was a seamless and professionally executed success. This behind-the-scenes effort was essential in supporting the meaningful conversations led by AFSP.
