The 2023 Mobies Awards brought the mobile gaming and esports community together in Los Angeles. As a Network Streaming Engineer with Streaming Media Live, I helped prepare the paths that carried the live program from the venue to its online destinations.
Designing for failure before going live
The workflow used primary and backup internet connections with more than one encoding path. That gave the team alternatives if a connection, encoder, or destination behaved differently once the event was underway.
My role included path preparation, monitoring, and troubleshooting across the live window. Platform differences and international distribution requirements made clear naming, signal checks, and coordinated handoffs as important as the equipment itself.
Keeping attention on the awards
The production existed to support the people and work being recognized by the Mobies. Our technical goal was to make the distribution dependable enough that viewers could focus on the program rather than the route it took to reach them.
The event reinforced that redundancy is a team practice. Backup connections and encoders only help when they are tested, monitored, and connected to a clear decision about when and how to use them.
