Life Moments
Pioneering On-Set Communication: Developing a Remote-Controlled Tally Light for SetNet
In the fast-paced and highly coordinated world of film and television production, maintaining clear and precise communication between directors, camera operators, and performers is critical. Recognizing a specific need within this intricate ecosystem, a solution was conceptualized to streamline communication and improve efficiency on set. The objective was to create a system that could signal to actors and crew members when a camera was live, traditionally indicated by a tally light. The unique challenge was to enable this functionality remotely over an Ethernet connection, all the while ensuring the solution remained discreet and versatile for use in various production settings.
Full-Time to Retainer: Redefining Work-Life Balance on My Terms
When COVID-19 started winding down, it exposed the financial strains many companies were facing, including SetNet, where I served as the IT manager for six years. In response, we made a tough decision to shut down our Burbank office and move everything to a new office built on the owner's property, equipped with the latest in fiber and redundant microwave connections. Once we stabilized, my role transitioned from full-time to a retainer basis, opening up new avenues for me.
Behind the Scenes of COVID: Setnet's Pivot That Saved Movie Making
When COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill, it seemed like the motion picture industry was heading for a long intermission. But at Setnet, we saw an opportunity not just to survive but to thrive and ensure the show went on. I want to share the story of how my team and I developed a product that not only kept us afloat but also revolutionized remote production in these unprecedented times.
Remote Productions
Pivot: With Covid-19 upon us and lockdowns in effect. We pivoted Setnet into remote productions. We developed a way to drop two boxes off at a location, giving us redundant stable internet and controlling real production cameras and lighting remotely.
